A Reflection of our Achievements During 2008-09

Although 2008-09 was a very challenging time for our school community, it was also a year in which the school celebrated a number of achievements.

Quality Marks

We achieved the Basic Skills and Effective Early Learning Quality Marks last year. Quality Marks are an endorsement of our good practice, by external assessors. They take the form of a 1 day inspection which includes: lesson observations; interviews with some pupils, parents and governors and discussions with the school's leadership team. The Basic Skills Quality Mark celebrates our provision for developing the reading, writing and mathematics skills of our pupils; as well as acknowledging the range of support programmes we have for pupils who are experiencing difficulties in these areas.

The Effective Early Learning Quality Mark recognises the excellent practice we have in our Nursery and Reception classes. We are 1 of only 2 schools in Sefton to have gained this award. As a result of this, a number of schools in Sefton have made appointments for their staff to observe the work undertaken in Nursery and Reception and to talk with our staff about it. This too has been a lovely recognition of the fabulous work that goes on in our school.

Y6 SATs Results

Our Y6 SATS results were a great success and we outperformed the targets set for us.

English Targets and Actual Results:

Target set - Level 4 81%

School's Actual  - Level 4 90%

Target set - Level 5 22%

Maths Targets and Actual Results:

Target set - Level 4 80%

School's Actual - Level 5 50%

Targets are based on the children's results at the end of Y2.

Music

All of our Y4 pupils were given the opportunity to learn an instrument last year (violin or cello) as part of the Wider Opportunities Scheme. Groups of Y5 and Y6 pupils also received violin lessons. For the first time in our school fifteen Y6 pupils were given the opportunity to learn a brass instrument. All of our children worked hard and were invited to perform at a concert in the Floral Hall in Southport, which proved to be a great success. It was lovely to see so many parents supporting the event. The brass band also performed at a number of venues around the Crosby and Waterloo area  - including our Summer Fair. It should be noted all of these activities take place without any cost to parents, including the loan of an instrument for 1 year.

Sport

One of our projects last year was to enrich the PE curriculum; as well as broaden the range of pre and after school clubs. All of the children received football coaching sessions provided by Active Soccer and the KS 2 pupils also received rugby, tennis, cricket and hockey coaching sessions provided by Community Sports coaches. Y3 and Y4 pupils had dance lessons throughout the year and our Y3 pupils performed at the Wally Cain dance festival. We also took part in a number of inter-school competitions including multi skills events for Y1, Y2, Y3 pupils held at Sacred Heart. Y5 and Y6 pupils participated in athletics and rounders competitions. It was also the first time that our school took part in the Crosby Schools swimming gala.

Our pre and after school clubs included: basketball, football, netball, multi skills for Y1 and Y2 pupils, and dance. We also established links with Waterloo Primary school who brought their children to our netball club to help the pupils develop their skills through regular competition. Our Y6 football team was extremely successful winning both the penalty shoot-out completion, held at Marine FC and finishing top of their league. Our Y5 team also performed very well  - reaching the final of the Y5 tournament.

Pupil Safety

Teaching pupils about road safety was a priority last year and we were delighted to be able to provide pedestrian training sessions for all of our Y1 pupils; as well as enabling 23 of our Y5 children to participate in the cycling training programme.

Community Projects

Our school is a member of the Crosby Capital Cluster Group, which means we work together as a community of schools on shared projects. One such project included the creation of a Crosby Schools School Council. Each school sent 2 representatives to a meeting and the children devised an action plan for improving the local area - this included improving the local parks. The council will meet again during this year to move the project forward.

Another project involved the development of an area in Marine Gardens. Mrs Sugden's class designed and planted a garden, along with pupils from St John's CE Primary and Waterloo Primary. Y3 performed a dance, for the mayor, at the opening of the gardens. An event documented in the Crosby Herald.

Some members of Y5 took part in an art project designed to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our coastline. Again this involved collaboration with a number of schools across Sefton. A lovely booklet of the children's work was produced and the project culminated in a special evening showcasing the work.

Special Visitor

February and March saw the arrival of a special visitor ...We became the only school in Sefton to become the custodian of Granada's very own ‘I love granadaland's superlambanana'. I am sure you will all remember how fabulous the statue looked in our Reception area. We acquired the superlambanana due to a Y5 and Y6 art project; whereby the children designed and made their own superlambanana models. The Community Projects Department in Granada really liked the children's work and felt we deserved to look after a real model.

In truth this is only a fraction of the wonderful things that shaped our curriculum and school community last year. We should not forget that Y4 and Y6 pupils went on the residential visits to CHET and Kingswood respectively. The visits are only possible due to the willingness of the staff to give up their time. Y3 pupils celebrated making their First Holy Communion and Y5 children took part in the Reconciliation programme. The preparation for the Sacraments was led very ably by our parish friends. The PTA continued to work tirelessly to raise funds for our school including organising: the Christmas and Summer Fairs, discos for the children, coffee mornings and an Elvis Brettini evening! Money raised was used to pay for a number of Christmas events, as well as purchase resources such as reading books, a cooker and PE mats. All of the children benefitted from this fundraising. Many thanks to everyone who supported the PTA events and indeed all aspects of school life.
