[title] => [Autumn Term 2009 - The Year So Far!]
[body] => [
Welcome back! We have had a delightful start to the new school year. The children are bright and bubbly; the school building is clean and tidy and even the sun has decided to make an appearance!

We have a number of projects planned for this term; ranging from PTA events through to Family Learning Activities. We are very keen to host a series of activities which will provide information about aspects of your child's curriculum; as well as enabling families to work alongside their children. We have started this work by organising a series of pilgrimages to St. Thomas' Church. The parishioners of St. Thomas' and Sue Kendall have been instrumental in making this a successful venture. Mrs Speed's and Mrs McAnespy's class have already completed the pilgrimage and the children had a fantastic time learning about the art and architecture of the Church. We were even treated to an impromptu concert, when a musician, who is staying in Waterloo, arrived in Church for some music practice using the Church's organ. I was particularly delighted with the number of adults who accompanied the visit. The pilgrimage will be repeated with other classes in the school and I hope family members take this opportunity to support their children.

We are constantly looking for ways in which to enrich and improve the curriculum. During our INSET day we reviewed our learning and teaching policy and spent time discussing how we could ensure all learning experiences are highly effective. I will be consulting the children to hear their views about what constitutes a good, meaningful and fun lesson. I would also like to consult parents regarding their expectations of school and their role in supporting their children at home. This will take the form of a chat over coffee - nothing too formal!

The staff all agreed that introducing a unit of study using a visit is a fabulous way of grabbing the children's attention and motivating them to want to find out more. As a result all of the children, from Y2 up to Y6, are happily engaged in visiting various places.

As some of you may already know, Mr. Kevin Clinton retires this month, after 25 years of service in our school. The PTA have organised a special Family Night in honour of Kevin and we hope many of you will join us in celebrating with Kevin and his family. The event is planned for Friday 9th October, 7.00 - 10.00 pm. The tickets will be sold after school from 28/09/09 - 30/09/09.

On Friday 25th September we are hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning. This will take place in the school hall (9.00-10.30 am). We will also be selling toast to the children at playtime - 10p a slice. I hope you can support this event - it would be lovely to see you.

The full programme of after school clubs will be up and running by next week. The focus for this half term will be sport, including: netball, football, dance and running. We are also providing the children with an extensive range of sports within school time. We have a tennis coach who will be working with all of the classes throughout the academic year. Y3 and Y4 pupils will have swimming lessons and Y6 pupils, who are unable to swim 25 metres, will have top up lessons during September and October.

Our commitment to music is still as strong as ever. All Y4 pupils will have the opportunity to learn to play a string instrument (violin or cello) this year. This is part of the Wider Opportunities scheme which the school buys into. Children who learned a string instrument last year and would like to continue with the lessons will be able to do so. Fifteen Y5 and Y6 pupils will also be given the opportunity to learn a brass instrument - this proved to be great success last year!
